By Celia C Solutions

Question by cruisecrazy: What exactly is IBS and celiac disease? What are symptoms?
Well anytime I eat a whole meal I have diarrhea really bad and a horribly upset stomache. I just want to know what those 2 things are. I know what IBS kind of is but not much about celiac though. Thanks so much for any help
what exactly do you mean by not being able to “absorb” food? What does this mean?

Ok Celiac disease is when you cannot absorb certain foods. In example, my friend Mollie has celiac disease and she can’t process wheat and corn and many foods, but she is an extreme case. Another friend, Michaela, just can’t proces gluten. so there are variations of the symptoms

  1. Anama says:

Celiac is a genetic, autoimmune disease that is triggered by the ingestion of gluten (sticky protein in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, etc.). The body reacts by attacking the small intestine and destroying the villi and the intestinal wall. The villi are not able to produce enzymes for digestion and since the intestinal wall is also damaged, you get the double whammy of decreased enzymes and loss of intestinal surface to absorb nutrients. 1 in 150-300 people have this disease, most are not diagnosed.

IBS is basically a spastic colon. It is diagnosed basically by eliminating other possibilities such as celiac, food intolerance (lactose, soy, etc), gastroparesis, thyroid issues, colitis (all forms including collagenous and Crohn’s) food allergies, IBD etc.

p.s. above answer person, corn is fine with celiac. It has gluten, but NOT the kind that causes an autoimmune reaction. Your friend Mollie has another seperate issue with corn that is NOT related to celiac such as a food allergy. If it is an allergy, you need to find out how severe, and learn to use her epipen in the case of an emergency.
