Question by LeAnn: When testing for celiac disease do they run a gluten allergy test?
In Aug. I went to the doctor, the doctor put me on a Gluten Free diet and she thought I had celiac disease. I have been going to the doctor every month now since August and now a different doctor is checking for gluten allergy does that mean I might have celiac disease if it comes out positive?

It is a blood test to diagnose coeliac disease. You do need to be eating gluten before the blood test as the non-presence of a gluten antibody can lead to a false negative. There is another test that can be done, but I don’t know about that test.

There are three different things. One is Coeliac Disease, which is an autoimmune disease. Two is a sensitivity or an intolerance. It causes similar symptoms to Coeliac Disease, but it doesn’t do the long term damage and it’s not autoimmune (although it’s thought that there’s some inflammation). And three, which is an allergy. The symptoms of an allergy are very different. You’d expect to see swelling, rashes and trouble breathing. None of these three are related in any way.

There’s a test for Coeliac Disease and a test for an allergy. I do not know much about an allergy to gluten, but it is rare and I don’t think it’s what you’re actually asking.

Firstly, your doctor is stupid. You should never be on a gluten free diet before you’ve been checked for Coeliac Disease by running the blood test. If you eat gluten free and then get the blood test done, it’ll be negative even if you have it. So if you want to be checked for Coeliac Disease you need to eat gluten for about 2 months before they can check it.

If you want to be checked for an allergy, that’s completely different. I’d assume they do a skin prick test and look for a welt. But if this comes back positive you should still avoid gluten, but a gluten allergy is in no way related to Coeliac Disease.

It sounds like you need to be seen by a gastroenterologist. They specialize in these conditions and can give you more sound advice.

There is a blood test that test for Celiac Disease that checks to see if your body is making the anti-bodies to fight gluten (those are what cause the problems with celiac disease). You need to be eating gluten for a little while before this test so your body will be making them and they can then see if you have a high enough level then you have Celiac Disease. They say that it is not 100% and if it comes out positive that you should then get a biopsy of your small intestine to be 100% but I haven’t seen nor has my doctor that if the blood test comes back positive the biopsy comes back negative. So it is up to you to decide if you just want to live the diet after the blood test or get 100% confirmation.

If they are just looking for an allergy they would do an allergy test like they would for any other allergy.
